A Study on the Hyperactive Child Syndrome in Korea

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence rate and the characteristics of the hyperactive children among child psychiatry and pediatric outpatients. Parents of consecutive 127 children of the child psychiatry clinic and 104 of pediatric clinic at the Seoul National University Hospital were requested to fill out Parent Symptom Questionnaire (PSQ). PSQ consists of 60 items of various behavior and emotional symptoms including 10 items of Conners¢¥ Abbreviated Symptom Questionnaire (ASQ) which was designed to diagnose and evaluate the hyperactivity in children.
This report is the analysis of hyperactive score (ASQ score) in two groups and characteristics of the hyperactvie children with ASQ score 18 or more. The results and the conclusions were as follows.
1. Average ASQ score of the child psychiatry group was 11.96 which was significantly higher than the ASQ score, 7.31 of pediatric group, (p<0.01)
2. The number of hyperactive children with ASQ score 18 or more were 34 among 127 child psychiatry patients (26.8%) and 2 among 104 pediatric patients (1.9%). The difference were moderately significant (p<0.01)
3. The chart review of the 34 hyperactive children revealed the following clinical diagnoses: Hyperactive child syndrome 11, Mental retardation 6, Infantile autism 4. Seizure disorder 14, Childhood psychosis 2., Conduct disorder 2, Anxiety disorder 2, Passive-dependent personality 2, and Sleep disorder 1. The ASQ score of 11 hyperactive child syndrome was slightly higher than the score of the children with other diagonses, but it was not statistically significant.
4. The sex ratio of the 11 children of hyperactive child syndrome was 8:3 (boys: girls)
5. Since 11 hyperactive child syndrome patients represent 8.7% of total child psychiatry patients it is concluded that the hyperactive child syndrome is one of the major child psychiatry disorder in Korea.
